MEDAL OF EXCELLENCE 2023: Local Innovation Award. Semi-Permanent Shelter Design Challenge.
BACKGROUND
Call it the Ugandan Nobel Prize because Innovation Consortium’s MEDAL OF EXCELLENCE is recognizing and rewarding outstanding local excellence in ideation and creation through this prestigious annual Award.
The 2023 edition was themed the Dr. Moses.K. Musaazi Challenge and it was awarded to the ideator with the best “SEMI-PERMANENT SHELTER” Design.
Many good ideas were submitted, from which six finalists were selected to present their designs at the award ceremony.
The winning idea came from MUK Architecture student Nankabirwa Anointed, whose pivotal shelter design was inspired by center anchor pole walling and roofing. She took home the prestigious innovatively designed and locally made Medal award plus a cash prize of USD 500.
The first runners up was a team of two students, Walusimbi Joseph (3rd year Electrical engineering) and Tumwesigye Robinah (3rd Year Architecture). These won a cash prize of USD 150 and a special physical token of appreciation from Innovation Consortium.
The second runners up was a team of four students from Kyambogo university (Aturinde Nuwe, Musiitwa Isaac, Kibirige Jethro and Mugoya Raymond). These took home a USD 100 cash prize and a special physical token of appreciation from Innovation Consortium.
The Medal of Excellence is awarded annually and each year it takes on a different socially relatable theme and is named after different reward-worthy local ideators. The inaugural medal was named after Zikusooka Nyonyintono, the man responsible for designing Jinja city. This year’s medal patron was the late Dr. Moses. K. Musaazi, the visionary behind MAKA pads and sustainable construction.
